Why Perfection Can Wait: Unlocking Success Through Bold Decision-Making
When I first started my journey as a project manager, I was obsessed with the idea of perfection. I thought that if I could just dot every ‘i’ and cross every ‘t,’ I would be able to deliver flawless projects and achieve unparalleled success. Little did I know that this pursuit of perfection was actually holding me back. So, today, I want to share with you why perfection can wait and how bold decision-making can help you unlock success in your career.
You know that feeling when you’ve had a rough day at the office? Those days when nothing seems to go according to plan, and you find yourself questioning every decision you’ve made? I’ve had my fair share of those days too. But what if I told you that sometimes, it’s not about having a perfect day or a perfect project? It’s about being bold, taking risks, and learning from the imperfections.
Let me take you back to a specific day a few years ago. I was working on a high-stakes project, and everything seemed to be going wrong. My team was behind schedule, we were facing unexpected roadblocks, and I was feeling the pressure from stakeholders. I spent countless hours poring over every detail, analyzing each aspect of the project, trying to identify where things had gone awry. I was stuck in an endless loop of overthinking, convinced that if I could just find the perfect solution, everything would fall into place.
But that’s when it hit me. There would never be a “perfect” solution. I was so focused on achieving perfection that I had become paralyzed, unable to make decisions or move forward. In that moment, I realized that perfection was an illusion. What mattered was my ability to make bold decisions, even in the face of imperfection.
So, I took a deep breath and made some tough calls. I re-prioritized tasks, reallocated resources, and communicated the new plan to my team and stakeholders. Sure, it wasn’t perfect – but it was progress. And as we moved forward, I discovered something remarkable: by embracing imperfection and making bold decisions, we were able to find creative solutions to our problems and ultimately deliver a successful project.
Now, I’m not saying you should throw caution to the wind and make reckless choices. But there’s something to be said for recognizing that perfection isn’t always attainable – and that sometimes, you need to make a decision based on the best information you have at the time, even if it’s not perfect.
Here are a few ways I’ve learned to let go of perfectionism and embrace bold decision-making:
Accept that perfection is an illusion: No project or decision will ever be flawless. Once you accept this, you can focus on finding the best solution given the information and resources available to you.
Trust your intuition: As project managers, we often rely on data and analysis to guide our decisions. While this is important, don’t forget to trust your instincts. Sometimes, your gut feeling can lead you to make the right call, even when the data is inconclusive.
Embrace uncertainty: The world is constantly changing, and so too are our projects. Embracing uncertainty allows you to be agile and adapt to changing circumstances. It’s better to make a decision with imperfect information than to wait for the perfect moment that may never come.
Learn from mistakes: Bold decision-making means you might make mistakes. But that’s okay – it’s how we learn and grow. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, focus on what you can do differently next time.
Foster a culture of innovation: Encourage your team to think outside the box and take risks. By creating an environment where it’s okay to make mistakes, you’ll empower your team to push boundaries and find innovative solutions to challenges.

Communicate openly: Transparency is key when making bold decisions. Keep your team and stakeholders informed about your thought process and the reasoning behind your choices. This will help build trust and create a collaborative environment.
Reflect and refine: After making a bold decision, take the time to reflect on its outcomes. What worked? What didn’t? Use this insight to inform your future decision-making and continually refine your approach.
By letting go of perfection and embracing bold decision-making, I’ve not only seen significant improvements in my projects but also experienced tremendous personal growth. No longer weighed down by the pressure of perfection, I’ve discovered newfound confidence in my abilities as a project manager and leader.
So, my fellow leaders, I encourage you to let go of the idea that you need to have all the answers and make perfect decisions. Instead, focus on making the best choices you can with the information available to you. Be willing to take risks, learn from your mistakes, and constantly adapt your approach. By doing so, you’ll unlock a world of possibilities and success that you never thought possible.
Remember, perfection can wait. It’s time to embrace the power of bold decision-making and start realizing your true potential as a project manager and leader.
You’ve got this!
